Fireworks

I was up at midnight last night during a huge storm we had here. It was a little scary, but not too bad. After the worst had past I heard a pretty loud cracking noise, but couldn't see anything in the back yard.
We awoke to this view out our front door this morning...

The pictures don't do justice to the size of the tree. A huge part of our old maple tree came down, stretching right up to our front bay window.

This shows more clearly how big the tree is...

Guess we'll be firing up the old chainsaw on the 4th of July!

There's gotta be an interesting homeschool lesson in that event. :)

Glad y'all are safe!!

Sorry about the beautiful tree! There appears to be a large black scar right by Cheery, was the tree struck by lightning?

Since the damage is so extensive, I would suggest having an arborist come and inspect the tree to see if it needs treatment. It is possible it may die from shock and that would truly be tragic to loose that big old tree!

I don't think it was struck by lightning, but it had a big hole in that part of the tree that collected dirt and stuff-I think it just rotted and weakened. The wind was pretty terrific and I think that is what took it down.

I am not sure we have arborists here! "Eh, looks like you lost a limb, m'am." :)

Maybe your Home Depot could recommend someone to come out and look at your tree... or city hall may have someone they use for all the beautiful trees in town.

Wait a minuet, you live in a college town! Surely there is a botany professor at the university that could look at your tree, or maybe even have their students come out on a field trip and suggest treatment.

Just some ideas about saving the tree. ; )
